Qatar Submits Draft Resolution to U.N. on Human Rights Violations in Syria

Qatar has presented a draft resolution to the U.N. General Assembly's Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee) regarding human rights violations in Syria. HE Ambassador Sheikha Aliaa Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks as she addressed the committee, saying that the situation amounts to war crimes and violates international humanitarian law. She added that the situation there is deteriorating six years after the start of the conflict and the suffering of the Syrian people continues as civilians are deprived from basic human rights. The Qatari diplomat went over the draft resolution that she described as balanced and objective, saying that it reflected the recent developments in Syria as it pointed to the recent escalation in attacks against civilians in Aleppo and besieged areas. It also calls for reactivating the agreement on ceasing hostilities and urges all sides, particularly the Syrian regime, to stop attacks against civilians and residential areas, the ambassador said.


Qatar emphasizes the importance of strengthening the institutional frameworks that deal with population and development issues in the Arab region

New York/Information Office/09 November 2016/ The State of Qatar, which chairs the 50th session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, has confirmed the importance of working to strengthen the institutional frameworks that deal with population and development issues in the Arab region. This came in a speech delivered by HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani via video from New York at the opening session of the 17th annual meeting of the heads of population councils and committees in the Arab countries which began in Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh. HE emphasized the importance of this session, which is being held after a year of achieving the desired development by adopting the 2030 Sustainable Development plan. Qatar's participation in the 17th session of the annual meeting of the heads of councils and committees populated Arab countries came at the invitation of the General Secretariat of the Arab League (Population Policies, Expatriate and Migration Department).

60 Countries Support Qatar and Saudi Arabia's Initiative To Protect Civilians in Syria

The State of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and 60 member states in the United Nations called on the international community and the Security Council to shoulder their responsibility and take the necessary action to protect civilians in Syria from the collective massacres. On the initiative of the State of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, a written message adopted by 62 countries, has been sent to the Permanent Representative of Russian Federation to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of October, Vitaly Churkin, expressing anger and shock over the serious violence escalation in the besieged City of Aleppo. Signatory countries condemned the dangerous military escalation in the city of Aleppo, expressing support for the call by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the international community and the Security Council to assume full responsibility to take appropriate measures aimed at protecting the Syrian people and civilians from collective massacres and war and putting an end to the violence in Syria.
